The Hevsel Gardens cover around 700 hectares of fertile, cultivated land between Diyarbakır Fortress and the Tigris River. Fed by springs on the steep slope below the walls, the gardens kept the fortified city supplied with food and water for centuries.
The gardens joined the UNESCO World Heritage List together with the city walls in 2015, and today they are one of the most peaceful places in the city for walks, photography and birdwatching.
Concierge tipThe best viewpoint is the stretch of wall between the Mardin Gate and the Seven Brothers Tower. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
